7 Common Gun Fit Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
Posted by Xcel Shooting Sports on Apr 22nd 2026
The Most Common Gun Fit Mistakes We See
Most shooters don’t realize they’re fighting their gun.
They assume:
- it’s their timing
- their focus
- their technique
But more often than not…
it’s a fit issue.
At Xcel Shooting Sports, we’ve worked with shooters at every level — and we see the same mistakes over and over again.
The problem?
Most of them don’t look like mistakes at first.
They look like “normal habits.”
1️⃣ Lifting Your Head to Find the Target
This is the most common issue we see.
A shooter mounts the gun…
and then subtly lifts their head to see the target.
It might feel natural.
But what it actually does is:
- break alignment
- shift your eye position
- introduce inconsistency
Your eye should already be in the right place.
If you have to move your head after mounting, your fit is off.
2️⃣ Forcing the Gun Into Position
Some shooters muscle the gun into place every time.
They:
- press harder into the shoulder
- adjust mid-mount
- “set” the gun manually
That’s not consistency.
That’s compensation.
A properly fitted shotgun should come up naturally — not be forced into place.
3️⃣ Chasing Targets Instead of Seeing Them
When vision and fit aren’t aligned, shooters start chasing targets.
You’ll see:
- overcorrection
- hesitation
- late movement
It becomes reactive instead of fluid.
But this isn’t just a timing issue.
It’s often a vision + alignment issue tied directly to fit.
4️⃣ Accepting Recoil as “Normal”
A lot of shooters think:
“Shotguns just kick.”
Yes — recoil exists.
But excessive discomfort?
- cheek slap
- shoulder fatigue
- flinching
That’s not something you should just accept.
Poor fit can amplify recoil dramatically.
5️⃣ Inconsistent Mount (That You Don’t Notice)
This one is sneaky.
You may think your mount is consistent…
but small variations:
- head position
- shoulder placement
- cheek pressure
add up over time.
And those small inconsistencies:
turn into missed targets
6️⃣ Buying a New Gun Instead of Fixing the Problem
This is a big one.
A shooter struggles…
So they upgrade.
New brand. New model. New price point.
But nothing changes.
Why?
Because the issue wasn’t the gun — it was the fit.
We see this all the time.
And it’s frustrating for the shooter, because they’re trying to solve the right problem the wrong way.
7️⃣ Adapting Instead of Addressing
This is the most dangerous one.
Because it feels like progress.
Shooters say things like:
- “I just learned to shoot it this way”
- “I’ve adjusted to it”
But what’s really happening is:
they’re building workarounds
And workarounds create limits.
What All of These Have in Common
None of these mistakes mean you’re a bad shooter.
They mean:
your system isn’t working together properly
Your:
- vision
- body
- gun
should work as one unit.
When they don’t, you compensate.
What Happens When Fit Is Right
When a shotgun truly fits:
- your mount becomes automatic
- your eye aligns naturally
- your movement feels smoother
- recoil feels controlled
- your confidence increases
And most importantly:
you stop thinking about the gun
The Xcel Difference
At Xcel Shooting Sports, we don’t start with the gun.
We start with you.
Our process is simple:
Vision first
Fit second
Equipment third
Because when you understand the foundation, everything else becomes easier.
Stop Guessing. Start Understanding.
If you recognized yourself in even one of these mistakes…
That’s a good thing.
It means you’re closer to solving it.
Most shooters never even realize what’s happening.
