How to Know If Your Shotgun Fits You (7 Simple Signs)

How to Know If Your Shotgun Actually Fits You
Most shooters assume their shotgun fits.
After all, it feels okay.
It shoots.
They’ve gotten used to it.
But here’s the reality:
“Feels fine” and “fits correctly” are not the same thing.
A shotgun that doesn’t truly fit can quietly create:
- inconsistency
- fatigue
- missed targets
- loss of confidence
And many shooters never realize the cause.
The good news?
You can spot the signs.
Start With This Simple Question
When you mount your shotgun…
Does it come to the same place every time — naturally?
Not forced.
Not adjusted mid-mount.
Not something you “fix” after bringing it up.
If the answer is no, something may be off.
A Quick Self-Check: 7 Signs Your Shotgun May Not Fit
Use this as a starting point.
If you recognize more than one or two of these, it’s worth taking a closer look.
1️⃣ You Have to Adjust Your Head After Mounting
If you’re:
- lifting your head
- pressing down hard into the stock
- shifting to find the rib
your eye alignment isn’t naturally supported.
A proper fit should bring your eye into position without effort.
2️⃣ Your Mount Feels Inconsistent
Does the gun land differently each time you mount it?
Even small inconsistencies matter.
If your mount isn’t repeatable, your shooting won’t be either.
3️⃣ You Feel Excessive Recoil or Discomfort
Recoil shouldn’t feel punishing.
If you’re experiencing:
- shoulder soreness
- cheek slap
- fatigue earlier than expected
your fit may be working against you.
4️⃣ You Miss Targets That Felt “Perfect”
This is one of the biggest red flags.
You know the shot was right…
But the target doesn’t break.
That often points to:
1. alignment issues
2. eye dominance inconsistencies
3. fit problems
5️⃣ You’re Fatiguing Faster Than You Should
A properly fitted shotgun works with your body.
A poor fit forces compensation.
That compensation adds up:
- more tension
- more effort
- less endurance
6️⃣ You Struggle on Certain Angles
If certain targets consistently give you trouble — especially from one side —
it may not be technique.
It may be: how your eye and gun are aligning together
7️⃣ You’ve “Adapted” to Your Gun
This one is subtle.
If you’ve ever thought:
“I’ve just learned to shoot it this way…”
there’s a good chance you’ve adapted around a fit issue.
And adaptation often hides the real problem.
What Proper Fit Should Feel Like
When a shotgun truly fits, things change.
The mount becomes automatic.
Your eye sits naturally over the rib.
The gun feels balanced — not forced.
Recoil feels controlled.
Targets break with more consistency.
Most importantly:
You stop thinking about the gun.
You focus on the target.
Why This Matters Before You Buy Anything
Many shooters try to fix problems by:
- buying a new shotgun
- switching brands
- changing loads
But if the underlying issue is fit…
> those changes won’t solve it.
They may even make things more confusing.
That’s why understanding your fit comes first.
